Users Discontinuing Weight-Loss Medications Regain Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Than Dieters

Obesity treatment often requires ongoing approaches.

A recent study reveals that patients who come off blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover reduced body mass far faster than those who end conventional diet and exercise plans.

Findings released in a prominent health publication demonstrates that while overweight people frequently drop about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"Individuals buying such treatments need to be aware of the potential of rapid weight regain when the treatment concludes," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain suggests a reversion to starting weight within about a year and a half.

Analyzing Approaches

The research, which looked at dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.

Scientists note that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone generally have a more gradual creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Quick Rebound

Nutrition scientists suggest the mode of action of the drugs explains the accelerated rebound.

The injections mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels far above than normal may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and may also reduce sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Stopping of this hormone supplement results in hunger is uncontrolled, making overeating far more likely."

A Lifelong Disease?

Health authorities recommend the injections for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians argue that, due to the likelihood of relapse, the treatment should be considered long-term.

This view is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "underscore the persistent character of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

Patient Accounts

People who have come off the medication explain a intense resurgence of appetite.

"I experienced something activating and I was suddenly extremely hungry," described a patient.

The struggle is worsened if patients have not adopted sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Significant Interest

Survey data indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest being substantial.

  • Adoption is more common among women than men.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the greatest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, researchers caution that while these medications are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic fix and maintained weight loss relies on combined behavioural changes.
