They're Applying to America What They Did to Christianity

The Trump movement's most telling and distinctive instances – not its most important, nor most brutal, nor most threatening, nor most foolish, but possibly its most revealing – occurred earlier this fall. During the period of several weeks, the US president began displaying all observers his designs for a lavish reception room two times larger of the White House and then began independently demolishing the eastern section to erect it.

He has done things countless times more severe – the existing assessment of casualties resulting from his reductions to international aid stands at 600,000 and increasing, and presently a study forecast his fossil fuel policies would result in fatalities 1.3 million more. Yet nothing as characteristic. No previous president would have dared – really, no former commander would have contemplated – solo demolishing large sections of the White House to build a Versailles-style party room, with the active collaboration of some of America's wealthiest, almost all of whom maintain dealings with federal agencies.

We transitioned from 'the meek shall inherit the world' into 'the humble will perish of cholera'

As confusing as it is to witness the leader attempt to overturn the traditional concept regarding democracy and replace it with its polar opposite, there is one large group within America who wouldn't consider it entirely new. That encompasses people such as ourselves – in older age cohorts close to half – who were brought up within mainstream Protestant traditions.

We have observed over the years while conservative evangelical congregations transformed the Christ we learned about into the complete reverse of who we understood him to be. Essentially, they turned a figure of affection into a figure of animosity who approves precisely the cruelties that he criticized in biblical teachings; this change developed more slowly, across decades instead of months, yet it remains disconcerting in the same ways, a disorienting gut punch for numerous individuals.

A Harmful Christianity Gains Ground

Therefore allow me to outline the Jesus from my upbringing, as conceptually Christ is the focus of Christian religion, and since the fastest-growing cadre among Americans may possess limited understanding about him as they consider themselves skeptics or doubters or religiously unaffiliated. I raise no objection with these different approaches, nor with any other faith; yet I maintain that contain precious wisdom of substantial value in biblical accounts.

It is emphatically definitely not the story of a powerful ruler appearing; rather, a baby is born to displaced parents in an automotive shelter, who must quickly flee to another nation to evade covert authorities. The child matures in modest conditions, a laboring woodworker; his message focuses on affection for other people, particularly for the poor – and not a sentimental love, but practical compassion, shown by providing food and sheltering. Jesus' answer to violence is to offer the additional cheek – not as a demonstration of submissive tolerance, but as a method to instruct the aggressor; his approach to wrongdoing states that when someone steals your outer garment you should give them your pullover also.

The apparent and direct reality that Christ in biblical accounts requests a kind of radical love concentrated on the impoverished has perpetually caused the Christian faith somewhat of a provocative belief system: engaging for the general public, but owing to its intrinsic extremism needing to be restrained. In the 1950s it was controlled via weakening – The Protestant faith was so prevalent that it practically sanctified existing conditions.

A Struggle for the Best Within Us

So I have been heartened to observe the determined opposition against Trump emerge during the previous year. It has served as great solace to assist in constructing the campaign that has taken to the streets in rally after rally, and likely has encouraged voters to show up in significant amounts in the off-year elections. We shall require to continue it, and with identical determination, with American flags throughout each rally and appeals to the finest aspects of American history.

We're going to be asked ... how did you receive the foreigner? Did you receive him and embrace them or refuse?

The country is optimally secured, in other words, by reference to the best about American history, similar to Christianity is optimally secured by relationship to that which renders it distinctive and beautiful, which is the example of Christ. In neither case does it suggest acting as if the most damaging regarding America and Christian faith did not happen; it signifies both meekness and conviction, a blend that genuine US believers should embrace.
