The Former President's Progressive Warning Misses Europe's Real Danger: Technological Stagnation.

Donald Trump's security policy document presents a flawed assessment of Europe. It claims that unrestrained immigration and so-called "progressive" agendas pose an grave threat to the continent's identity. However, this perspective is based on a serious misinterpretation of the reality. The true danger facing the EU is not cultural but technological and economic lag.

A Glaring Growth Gap Between Europe and the US

Statistics reveal a stark contrast. From 2008 and 2023, American economic output surged by eighty-seven percent, compared to a mere thirteen and a half percent growth for the European Union. Over this time, EU GDP per capita fell from 76.5% to just half of the American figure. Remarkably, even Mississippi now boasts a greater average income than several leading European economies like France and Italy.

Currently, about 50% of the world’s top fifty tech companies are US-based, while a mere four are European.

The Technological Deficit: A Critical Problem

The growing economic gap stems from stronger productivity growth in the US, fueled by breakthroughs and better use of resources. The landscape of global tech dominance is decidedly American. Over the past fifty years, hundreds of American startups have grown into enterprises valued at over $10bn, compared with only fourteen in Europe.

This disparity prompts a pressing issue: In the race for future industries like AI, semiconductors, and quantum computing, where does the EU positioned? Experts widely concede it is largely a two-horse race between the US and China, with European nations entering at a significant handicap.

Underlying Factors of Europe's Innovation Gap

Several major factors account for this technological divide.

  • Venture Capital: The US boasts a much more robust and more dynamic system for funding startups. The EU still lacks a genuine unified investment market, which caps the growth potential of new firms.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Excessive and fragmented regulation hamper European business. A US startup can introduce a service under one set of laws to access a consumer base of over 330 million. The EU, despite a larger population size, is divided among 27 separate regimes, creating significant market obstacles.
  • Mindset Differences: Views on entrepreneurial failure vary greatly. In some EU nations, business failure was once met with penalties, whereas in the United States, it is often considered a valuable lesson.
  • Military Investment: The United States enjoys a tightly woven innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. Europe's long-term lack of spending in military capabilities has eroded its ability in pioneering research.

A Path Forward: Grounds for Cautious Optimism

In spite of these hurdles, one can find causes for optimism. European leaders are increasingly aware of the existential challenge and have begun to propose serious reform. Key analyses on EU competitiveness and the internal market point to the need for major changes.

Given appropriate policies and regulatory reforms, Europe's strengths could support much higher levels of commercial innovation.

The continent retains significant advantages: high-quality workforce, excellent schools and universities, and world-class research institutions. Coupled with a large internal market and high savings rates, these elements have the potential to trigger a new wave of investment and entrepreneurship.

Importantly, even if Europe does not take the lead in developing next-generation technologies, it can still dramatically increase productivity by adopting and adapting advancements from other regions.

An Inflection Point

The European Union now stands at a decisive crossroads. To paraphrase a famous line, decline often happens "slowly, then all at once". So far, Europe's technological decline has been gradual. However, without decisive action to tackle its deep-seated problems, today's slow erosion could give way to a rapid and permanent decline in world influence.
