Prime TV Choices: 7 Can't-Miss Films This Week

Pick of the Week

The Substance Film

The filmmaker's daring critique tackles the oppressive nature of female beauty and the perceived horrors of growing older. Demi Moore presents a brilliant portrayal in the role of Elisabeth, a mature actress reduced to hosting an aerobics show on TV. Forced aside thanks to her unscrupulous employer Harvey, she seeks out a mysterious and horrifying process known as "The Substance". This produces a youthful duplicate named Sue, leading to a steadily more toxic connection between the two. This Friday, Paramount+

This Mystery Thriller

This suspenseful story features Keira Knightley playing Laura, a skilled journalist who decides to take a break from reporting on world issues to embark on a high-end voyage alongside a gravely sick Scandinavian billionaire and philanthropist, her spouse, and other filthy rich individuals. Yet once a mysterious woman goes overboard overnight and everyone insists she wasn't real, her journalistic curiosity take over. Streaming currently, on Netflix

Presence Film

The acclaimed director pushes his creative boundaries in this nifty paranormal narrative filmed completely through the eyes of the spirit. When a household including mother Rebekah plus Callina Liang as Chloe moves into their fresh home, the lens – as the unseen entity – shadows their actions. The daughter appears sensing the poltergeist, and the entity appears guarding her. Yet what is the reason? The premise is enjoyable that avoids overstaying, featuring a surprise that may be unexpected. October 11th, afternoon and evening times, Sky Cinema Premiere

Nicolas Cage's Meta Comedy

Cage embraces his unique fame through this self-referential adventure. He acts as a narcissistic celebrity called Nicolas Cage who accepts a million-dollar gig to appear at a festive event at a Mediterranean location for billionaire Javi Gutierrez. Contacted by government spies to spy on the suspected cartel boss, Cage's “nouveau shamanic acting ability” is put to the test. October 11th, prime time, the Channel 4 network

The Black Phone Horror

Scott Derrickson's locked-room horror remains effective despite the lack of a sequel. Located in 1970s Colorado, a series of kidnappings has left the youth frightened. Once Finney is taken by the villain and locked up in a dungeon, he fears a terrible outcome. Yet the disconnected phone on the wall continues to ring, with spooky callers providing assistance, as the prescient dreams from his sibling Gwen may be his salvation. An effective horror. October 11th, 10.50pm, Film4

The Eyes of Tammy Faye

In the struggle between God and Mammon, the victory is clear for greed in this director's brilliantly over-the-top biopic about the fallen TV preacher plus her lawbreaking partner. Garfield plays the corrupt Bakker, who states initially, claiming divine approval for wealth. Both individuals commence monetising the American public's spiritual convictions. It's an extravaganza of bad interior design, overdone appearance and bad faith, however Jessica Chastain achieves to depict Tammy Faye as a sympathetic figure. Tuesday 14 October, late night, Film4

Black Bag

This period's additional entry from Steven Soderbergh delivers a espionage tale as sharp like the turtlenecks worn by Michael Fassbender's British agent. His assignment is to discover a traitor within their ranks from five suspects – one of whom is his own wife. The two stars are masters of deadpan cool, leading to a delightful mental battle of fact versus fiction develops. Tom Burke, Regé-Jean Page, Naomie Harris and Marisa Abela take part the intelligent intelligence fun. Friday 17 October, 8.05am, 12.55pm, 8pm, Sky Cinema
