Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with France's air force in a coordinated attack targeting an underground arms cache in Syrian territory employed by the IS group, as stated by the UK Ministry of Defence.
The site, located using reconnaissance, was thought to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the announcement noted, and was situated in mountains just north of Palmyra in Syria's central region.
"Our fighter planes used precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a series of approach shafts down to the facility... preliminary assessments suggest the strike was effective," the ministry announced.
There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the strike late on Saturday and every plane involved returned safely, the MoD added.
The British jets were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.
Daesh - also known as Daesh - imposed jihadist rule over large swathes of Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.
"This strike demonstrates British leadership, and commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with our allies, to stamp out any re-emergence of IS and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the area," UK Defence Secretary John Healey stated.
UK warplanes have conducted overwatch operations over Syria to "prevent any attempted resurgence" of IS following its routing at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the authorities noted.
"I want to thank every member of the UK armed forces involved in this operation for their expertise and their courage," he said. "Including them were thousands of British personnel stationed over the holidays. This mission, to remove dangerous terrorists who endanger our safety, demonstrates how UK forces are ready to step up, throughout the year, protecting the UK within its borders and influential overseas."
In December, the US military executed what it called a "large-scale strike" targeting Islamic State objectives in the country, following an assault resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a local interpreter in Palmyra.
The United Nations estimates Islamic State still maintains an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 militants in Iraq and Syria.
