Weather balloons transporting numerous packages of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was forced to close for an extended period when dozens of them entered the national airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The operational halt led to 30 flight cancellations disrupting thousands of passengers, with authorities cautioning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Authorities reported that twenty-five weather balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two of which ending up directly over the main terminal.
Approximately 14 of the atmospheric instruments sent during the weekend passed through the metropolitan zone, which is situated near Lithuania's main urban center and adjacent to the frontier with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
At least 11 balloons containing eighteen thousand packages of contraband smoking materials have now been retrieved, though additional discoveries are expected, according to law enforcement authorities.
International Illegal Trade
While creating issues, officials emphasized that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - cigarettes from Belarus - are common occurrences in the Baltic region and Poland."
So far this year, 544 balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were recorded last year.
Cross-Border Effects
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has documented over one hundred incidents in which smuggled items were delivered from its border nation utilizing the weather devices.
Illegal Transport Methods
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminal organizations employ a technique that proves especially affected by weather factors rather than more controllable drones, officials clarified that "Atmospheric equipment are basic instruments used by illegal traders - they are more economical than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Representatives further stated that "Our services' aim is to seize the largest possible quantities of contraband and to apprehend coordinators and participants so that these practices become not financially viable and create minimal risk to civil aviation."
European Tensions
The recent incidents occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have caused air traffic disruption across European nations.
Parallel situations in adjacent nations have prompted European leaders to speed up talks about improving airspace protection throughout European airspace.
